Power and Control Cables

Power and Control Cables

Today, whether it’s a motor yacht or a sailing boat, electricity is an indispensable element. In this regard, one of the key components of electricity is electrical cables.

Cables that should be used on the water must be marine-grade cables. Marine-grade cables are essentially double-insulated, consist of multiple strands, and are made of tinned copper. This design minimizes oxidation due to exposure to seawater.

One of the biggest mistakes made in a boat's electrical installation is using cables with a thickness below the required specifications for the equipment. Cables that are thinner than necessary offer greater resistance to electrical current, leading to a drop in voltage, which can cause equipment failure.

This can also lead to electrical contacts overheating. Therefore, in areas with heavy electrical loads, thicker marine cables should be preferred. This ensures that power is delivered fully to the equipment consuming electricity.

It is also important to carefully select the routes through which the cables will pass. For instance, it is crucial to design the pathways for the cables to avoid excessive heat, seawater, and oil. Whenever possible, using cable ducts designed for this purpose would be advisable.
